Getting Started with the Program
- What are tryouts like?
- Players will be split into grades 9+10 and grades 11+12. Players on the 9+10 court that demonstrate varsity level skill will be moved up to the 11+12 court during tryouts. Tryouts take place over the first several days during preseason, and consist of double-session training times around a team lunch. Final teams will be determined before the end of the first week of pre-season. During this first week, players will move through basic skills, conditioning, drills and game play.
- How should one prepare for tryouts?
- Players should prepare for tryouts by maintaining their fitness levels (see Off-Season Training page for more info here), and developing their volleyball skill set. If possible, players should attend training camps over the summer, or practice with a volleyball on their own at home. Players can work on ball-handling skills by peppering (passing) individually or with a partner. Check out this video for drills you can do at home.
- What equipment is needed?
- Athletic sneakers, comfortable clothes, ponytail holder for long hair, knee pads (optional), face mask & hand sanitizer, water, lunch (only during double sessions).
- When do practices take place, how often, where?
- Before school starts practices take place in the morning through afternoon at either JW or PHS new gym (click HERE for Google map) depending on availability and construction (I'll send out more specifics as the season approaches!) During the school year we practice every day after school when we don't have games, and on some Saturdays.
- I've never played before, is that ok?
- YES! We understand that this sport can be hard for younger players to get into as we don't have many "feeder programs" in town, so many new players will be learning the sport for the first time. We encourage everyone to try their best and enjoy the experience!
